LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Laurel quarterback Keon Howard announced Tuesday that he will commit to The University of Southern Mississippi.

He will officially sign with the team Wednesday on National Signing Day.

Howard received an offer from the University of Memphis that he originally committed to. However, Howard decided Southern Miss would be a better fit.

"It's the best fit for me and my family can come watch me play more," Howard said.

He tweeted Monday afternoon about his decision:

“I would like to thank the University of Memphis for allowing me to be a part of their amazing program. That is definitely on the rise! And after talking things over with my family, I have decided to de-commit and reopen my recruitment. I have prayed about it and I feel this is the best decision for me. Thank you again to everyone who’s been of assistance to me through this process and for all your prayers.”

In Howard's senior year at Laurel, he passed for a total 3,317 yards and 43 touchdowns. He had 456 rushing yards along with three rushing touchdowns. Howard was a four-year starter and in 2014, the Golden Tornadoes were 5A State Champions.
