Hattiesburg kicks off Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The city of Hattiesburg kicked off its Earned Income Tax Credit-Awareness Day at the C.E. Roy community center.

The ETIC is a refundable tax credit available to qualifying lower-wage workers and their families. The community center will also be preparing free tax refunds every Wednesday throughout the tax season.

It is all part of the mayor's Financial Education Initiative.

"A lot of people look at as 'if I have children, I get ETIC,' but that is one of the things, there are a lot of factors that go into it when you are doing your taxes," said Latonia Ward, P.R.V.O. site coordinator. "So in a nutshell, EITC is when people think in their mind, this is where the big refund comes from." Forrest County residents who qualify can get their taxes done for free at several locations in Hattiesburg and Petal.
