USM names new head football coach

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The University of Southern Mississippi has named a new head football coach.

It was announced that Jay Hopson would take over as the head coach for The Eagles.

Southern Miss Athletics Director, Bill McGillis, tweeted "Welcome Jay Hopson to the @USMGoldenEagles #SouthernMiss family. Recruit Sunday. Team Sunday. Press Conference Monday!"

Hopson was the former head football coach at Alcorn State University and has worked as an assistant coach at Tulane, Delta State, LSU, Florida, Marshall, Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Michigan, and Memphis.

This comes less than a week after former head coach Todd Monken announced his resignation after accepting a coaching position at The Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
