Southern Miss searches for new head coach

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - With the departure of Southern Miss head football coach Todd Monken, the Golden Eagles are looking to hire a new coach that will keep the program on a winning track.

Monken announced his resignation Sunday afternoon to accept the offensive coordinator position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"This is the hardest decision of my career," Monken said.

USM football immediately opened up a nationwide search to fill the position, and Southern Miss officials said time is of the essence and they hope to have the position filled by week's end.

"I want to find a head football coach that can win a championship in 2016, because we have a championship team," Director of Athletics Bill McGillis said.

Coach Monken led  the Golden Eagles to a C-USA West division championship in 2015 and recorded a 9-5 record.

USM officials are considering current head coaches, offensive and defensive coordinators, and assistant coaches for the position.
