The University of Southern Miss started two construction projects on its campus Monday.

Construction workers will build a pathway between Pride Field and Scianna Hall to make it safer for people walking on campus. Ten parking spaces will also get added to the area.

Another construction project the university is working on is a new steel band tower with two observation decks that include space for instruments and recreation equipment

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is funding the project with a grant of $683,560. Southern Miss will pay for the rest of the project with $171,000.

Associate Vice President for Facilities Planning and Management Christopher Crenshaw said he is excited for the new change

“This pathway will allow us to provide a safe network for them to reach the student union also it will provide a safer access for our students with disabilities,” Crenshaw said.
