USM Online Graduate Nursing Program Ranked Among Nation’s Best

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

The online graduate nursing program at The University of Southern Mississippi has been included among the nation's Top 100 in a recent ranking by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the online program's first appearance in the national rankings.

The list, which places Southern Miss at No. 60 among colleges and universities with online nursing graduate programs, uses five key factors to determine the rankings. These factors include: student engagement, faculty credentials and training, peer reputation, student services and technology, and admissions selectivity.

"I am very proud of the Top 100 ranking by the U.S. News & World Report that validates the quality master's program offered by the Southern Miss College of Nursing," said Dr. Katherine Nugent, dean of the College of Nursing. "Achieving this mark of excellence is attributed to the expertise of the faculty, and to their commitment to faculty and student success."

Dr. Anita Boykins, associate dean in the College of Nursing, notes that with many graduate nursing program offering classes online, USM's national ranking presents opportunities to recruit and admit more students in master's degree nursing practitioner programs.

"The ranking also endorses the quality of our master's degree programs and our highly qualified faculty and staff," said Boykins. "Faculty and staff in the College of Nursing are dedicated to the mission of the University and college, while always striving to provide personal attention in academic and support services."

Currently, the USM online graduate nursing program has 112 students enrolled, which represents a three-fold increase from the previous year. Boykins points out that the online program allows students to take core courses and population-focused specialty courses in an online learning environment, while undertaking clinical experiences near their homes.

"Our graduates are prepared with an advanced degree and contribute to healthcare delivery in the state of Mississippi," said Boykins. "More importantly, they are prepared to positively impact health outcomes for the citizens of the state."
