Mobile, Ala.- Donta Pittman (SR/Waynesboro, Miss.) poured in a game high 22 points and Detrick Davis (SR/Waynesboro, Miss.) added 15 points as William Carey University moved into first place in Southern States Athletic Conference action with a 71-61 win over No. 19 Mobile on Thursday night at Pharr Gym.
The Crusaders (12-8, 7-2 SSAC) took charge early on as they put together a 10-0 run to open an 18-7 lead with 12:52 to play in the half. Mobile (12-7, 6-3 SSAC) fought back and cut the lead to 25-23 before Pittman reeled off seven straight points to help
WCU stretch the lead to 32-23. The Rams wouldn't go quietly and scored the final six points of the half to trim the Carey lead to 36-33 at the half.
The Rams scored the first bucket of the second half then Crusaders reeled off ten straight points to open a 46-35 lead with 18:03 left to play. Mobile refused to go away and trimmed the lead to two on separate occasions before Carey finally put the game away with an 11-3 run late in the half.
Troy Salvant (SO/Marrero, La.) joined Pittman and Davis in double figures with 11 points.
WCU returns to action on Saturday as they take on Loyola. Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm in New Orleans.
