Laurel to hold Mardi Gras parade Saturday

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

The Apollo Parade Group is inviting the public to come out  Saturday to its second annual Mardi Gras parade in Laurel.

The parade will feature over 46 floats participating in the procession and a crowd of over twelve-thousand is expected.

The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and will follow the same route as the Christmas parade and will begin on Mason Street.

George Kilgore, founder of the Apollo Parade Group, said that it is a chance for the public to come out and enjoy the fun.

“Last year we had several of the downtown merchants tell us that they had record sales that day,” Kilgore said. “We think it really boosts the economy, it’s good for the merchants, it’s good for the tax base of the city and it’s just good clean family fun for the people who live in Laurel and in the surrounding areas.”

All proceeds from this year’s Mardi Gras parade will go to benefit the Laurel Fraternal Order of Police.

The campus of William Carey was calm as the clock struck midnight and the date turned to January 21, 2017. Then-freshman soccer player Taylor Gautreaux turned in at about 1 a.m. She would be awoken two hours later to the sounds of a violent tornado just outside her dorm room wall.
