UBS offers Mardi Gras prize to blood donors

This is a news release from United Blood Services

Your opportunity for a chance to win a New Orleans Mardi Gras Ball package is almost gone!     Donate blood on or before January 24 and you will  be entered to win a pair of tickets to the Krewe of Orpheus Mardi Gras Ball in New Orleans on February 8th with a two night hotel stay at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans!  You will also receive a Mardi Gras themed T-shirt, while supplies last!  The winner of the Mardi Gras ball package will be pulled on Monday, January 25.  Act now and you could be celebrating Mardi Gras in New Orleans!   In 2016, resolve to donate blood at least three times in the year.   Add color to someone’s life, give blood!  Whole blood, double red cell, platelet and plasma donations are needed.  To make an appointment to donate, go to www.BloodHero.com and enter your zip code or call 601-264-0743.   For more information on donating blood, visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org.

Donors can donate at United Blood Services Donor Center in Hattiesburg located at 805 S. 28th Avenue.  The center takes donors six days a week:  Monday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Thursday CLOSED, Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,  Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

As always, all blood types are needed in order to prevent any blood type shortages from occurring.  However, United Blood Services is experiencing an increased need for type O negative red cells and type AB plasma donations.   Type O negative blood is the only type that can safely be given to patients of all blood types. Type AB is the universal donor for plasma, just as O negative is for red cells. We’ve seen the need for AB plasma grow as more hospitals expand their trauma care.

Donors can also visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org the day of their donation and click on the “Health History Questionnaire”.  This allows donors to complete the interview portion of their donation on-line, in the privacy of their home or office.  Make sure to print your “Fast track donation ticket” and bring it with you to your donation.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 years of age must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.  Donors receive a free cholesterol test. Donors also earn points in our “Hero in Me” online rewards store.  Points can be redeemed for movie tickets, pizza, shopping cards and more at www.BloodHero.com.  A photo ID is required to donate. For more information, call 877-UBSHERO (877-827-4376).
