WIGGINS, MS (WDAM) - Stone County marked its 100th anniversary Saturday by celebrating the life of a legendary major league baseball player who called the area home.
Folks gathered in Wiggins Saturday to say Happy Birthday to the late "Dizzy" Dean.
He was a Hall of Fame pitcher who was born in Arkansas, but retired to Stone County in the 1960s.
A birthday party at the Dizzy Dean Welcome Center was the kick-off of a year-long Centennial celebration. It featured plenty of baseball memorabilia, along with a classic and hot rod car show.
"Over the course of the year, we'll have several activities that recognize local heroes, but also over the course of the year, we'll be celebrating Stone County," said Betsy Rowell, executive director of the Stone County Economic Development Partnership.
"Dizzy" Dean was born on January 16th, 1910. He died in 1974.
