The Jones County Emergency Operations Center in Laurel has been named in honor of the former Civil Defense Director and his late wife.
The name was revealed during the ceremony on Tuesday as the Carl and Paula Carlos Jones County Emergency Operations Center.
The two have served Jones County when there was no 911 and the Civil Defense office was located in an old apartment building.
The couple was instrumental in bringing the 911 system as well as tornado sirens to Jones County.
Carl Carlos served as director for 31 years and also served as County Fire Marshall and the manager of the fairgrounds all while serving in the capacity as Jones County civil defense director.
“Back then there were two employees and that was the secretary and the director,” Carl Carlos said, “It was a fairly new agency and I had a chance to recommend my wife Paula and so she became my secretary.”
The Carl and Paula Carlos Jones County Emergency Operations Center was built in 2001.
