Hattiesburg looks to bypass Lamar County officials for spray fields

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The city of Hattiesburg wants to use 3,000 acres of land in Lamar County to build a wastewater spray field.

But now the city said they do not need permission from Lamar County officials.

Keith Turner, an attorney representing Hattiesburg, said Groundworx is pulling its petition from the Lamar County Planning Commission, but it is not because they are reconsidering using the land.

Turner said neither the planning commission nor county supervisor approval is needed to have this land zoned for a wastewater spray field because special zoning permits were not needed for the county's other spray fields.
So if the city's legal position is correct, it would bypass the Lamar County Board of Supervisors and planning department.

Seven On Your Side reached out to Lamar County Supervisor Warren Byrd who said at this point, there is nothing for the supervisors to take action on.

The Lamar County Planning Commission is still scheduled for a meeting Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The prospect of using 3,000 acres in Lamar County has already received push back from residents.
