People from across Mississippi gathered to honor the legacy of Vernon F. Dahmer Sr. at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Hattiesburg.
Dahmer was an NAACP leader from Forrest County that advocated for the voting rights of all people.
Fifty years ago, on January 10, 1966, Dahmer was killed by the Ku Klux Klan.
Last Friday, Governor Phil Bryant declared January 10, 2016 Vernon Dahmer Day.
