The city of Petal is celebrating a legal win.
Mayor Hal Marx said the city reached an agreement with Hattiesburg over sewer rates.
Marx said it was about giving citizens a fair rate.
The city now has a formula in place so that in the future, the sewer rate will continue to have a fair rate for the wastewater treatment.
"I want the citizens of Petal to know that we negotiated a fair rate, one would not require any kind of immediate increase in rates,” Marx said. “Obviously everything in the future, things will go up in the future but nothing near what we were facing had Hattiesburg been able to get the rate they had originally wanted to charge us.”
This has been a contentious issue since August 2013, when Petal sued Hattiesburg for increasing fees for the use of Hub City sewage lagoons.
"We are pleased that we reached an agreement without having to go to trial,” Marx said. “I want to thank Mayor DuPree and the city of Hattiesburg for sitting down and talking with us and helping us work this out. We consider ourselves to be neighbors and we want to be partners we don't like having to go to court to have to settle disputes."
