Bond set for Jones Co. man charged with sexual battery against minor family members

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Jones County man charged with sexual battery against minor family members made his initial appearance in court Friday. 

He is charged with three counts of molestation for one child and two counts of sexual battery for the two other children. His bond was set at $20,000 cash per charge, with a total of $100,000 bond in cash. 

In late October 2015, Jones County Sheriff’s Investigators received a law enforcement referral packet from the Department of Human Services containing information of possible sexual abuse by a family member of three minors.

The suspected perpetrator was Charles Brunet, 75 of Laurel, according to a news release from the Jones County Sheriff's Department. 

The investigation began with forensic interviews of the minors now ages 14, 12 and 9.

During the interview process all three detailed inappropriate activity that occurred between them and Brunet, beginning in 2011 through 2015.

A thorough investigation continued and a warrant was issued for Brunet’s arrest on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 on one count of Sexual Battery. Brunet was picked up and brought in for questioning, according to the release.

During his interview, he admitted to four additional inappropriate encounters with the minors, according to the release. .

Brunet is being held at the Jones County Adult Detention Center, charged with two counts of sexual battery and three counts of molestation.

Sexual Battery carries a maximum prison sentence of 30 years per count.

Molestation carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years per count.

Brunet’s initial appearance at Jones County Justice Court will be Friday, January 8, 2016 at 10 a.m.
