Laurel man charged with assault on a police officer

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

On Tuesday, Sgt. Earl Reed with the Laurel Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 700 block of West 15th Street.

During the stop, Joseph E. Gilmore Jr.,24,  became uncooperative and assaulted Sgt. Reed by striking him in the head, according to a news release issued by LPD. 

Sgt. Reed was then assisted by LPD patrol in taking Gilmore into custody.

Sgt. Reed suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment from an LPD Medic.

Gilmore faces misdemeanor traffic violations, open container, and felony assault on a police officer, according to the release.

Gilmore will have his initial appearance in Laurel Municipal Court Wednesday.

Sgt. Michael Reaves is the lead investigator in the case.

    The University of Southern Mississippi ended Saturday’s regular-season baseball finale at Marshall University the same way it started, with a bang. The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in both the second and ninth innings, scoring eight runs in each, as USM finished off a first-ever sweep of the Thundering Herd on its home turf with a 18-9 victory at Epling Stadium.

    A man is recovering from injuries after he claims he was beaten by officers with the Laurel Police Department. Thirty-six-year-old James Barnett indicated the incident took place on Tuesday, May 15.
