MDOC investigating homicide at Parchman, prison on lockdown

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Department of Corrections issued a news release Friday afternoon regarding a homicide at Parchman. 

Carlos Jack, 43, was pronounced dead at the prison hospital after 10 a.m. The assault occurred an hour earlier, according to the news release. 

The suspect in the homicide has been identified as 35-year-old Myran Shanks. 

According to investigators, Shanks used a homemade shank as weapon. 

Jack was serving a 25-year sentence for armed robbery in Lowndes County, and was convicted in September of 2002. 

Shanks has been in prison since 1998, and is serving a 30-year sentence for burglary, aggravated assault, and grand larceny in Tallahatchie County and armed robbery in Panola County. 

According to the news release, no other inmates were involved and there were no other injuries.
