ELLISVILLE – Two Jones County Junior College football standouts have been honored nationally.
Punter Patrick Ponder was named an NJCAA All-American first-team on special teams and linebacker Ty Hill was named an NJCAA All-American second-team on defense. The list was released on Monday afternoon.
Ponder, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound sophomore from Bay St. Louis, led the NJCAA and the MACJC in punting with a 43.1 yards per kick average on 54 punts. He had a season’s best kick of 82 yards vs. East Central and had 14 punts that went inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.
He was also chosen to the All-MACJC first-team and All-Region 23 teams.
Ponder was also named the MACJC Special Teams Player of the Week twice and the NJCAA Special Teams Player of the Week once this season.
Hill, a 6-foot, 210-pound sophomore from Brookhaven, had a stellar campaign for the Bobcats. He led the MACJC and finished 19th nationally in total tackles with 96 stops – 10.7 tackles per game.
He was named the MACJC South Division’s Most Valuable Defensive Back, All-MACJC first-team and All-Region 23. Hill also played in the MACJC All-Star Game.
