HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Construction is underway on a stretch of the Longleaf Trace that will connect The University of Southern Mississippi and downtown Hattiesburg.

Phase III will join the Southern Miss Gateway to Main Street.

Work began in late October and is set for completion in January.

The Mississippi Dept. of Transportation is paying for 80 percent of the $1.3 million project. The City of Hattiesburg is paying 20 percent.

"It's looking great, I think it will be a great thing for the city," said Lamar Rutland, director of engineering for the City of Hattiesburg. "The Trace is used by people everywhere. A lot of people travel here to ride on the Trace."

A future phase will connect the Train Depot to Chain Park.
