HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

The Master of Public Health at The University of Southern Mississippi ranks No.20 among the 30 most affordable public health master’s programs in a list compiled by Healthcare Administration Degree Programs.

The ranking considered data provided by the National Center for Education Statistics’ College Navigator Database. From among more than 200 qualifying programs, the top 30 accredited programs in the nation were selected and ranked based on average annual cost, including tuition and fees.

“We are pleased to be included on the list as it reflects the competitive value of our graduate public health education,” said Dr. Ray Newman, professor and chair of the Department of Public Health. “As a fully accredited program, we benefit the public by promoting the health, safety and welfare of society by educating competent public health professionals.”

The College of Health’s Department of Public Health is recognized as having the first accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) program in the state of Mississippi. Emphasis areas include epidemiology and biostatistics, health education, health policy and administration, and an executive format.

“Educating advanced public health professionals is critically important at every level – from local to global – but nowhere more so than in Mississippi, where we are working hard to turn around some ugly health statistics,” said Dr. Michael Forster, dean of the College of Health. “I am delighted that the word is getting out that Southern Miss offers one of the most affordable high-quality MPH programs available.”

Graduates are qualified for upper-level jobs in health administration, research, or education in a variety of settings including hospitals, long-term care facilities, managed care organizations, state and regional health departments, and industry and government agencies.

“Our success is reflected by the degree to which our students become well-read, articulate, creative, and critical thinkers,” said Newman. “It is measured by their display of specialized knowledge and abilities suitable to the pursuit of careers and lives in our complex, ever- changing world.”
