Petal falls to Starkville 27-7 in 6A State Championship

MISSISSIPPI (WDAM) - OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Andreus Swanigan ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns to lead Starkville over Petal 27-7 on Friday night for the Mississippi Class 6A state championship.
    
It is Starkville's (14-1) sixth state championship in school history and first since 2012.
    
Starkville receiver A.J. Brown had 10 catches for 117 yards and scored on a 32-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to give Starkville a 14-0 lead.
    
Starkville quarterback Montario Montgomery was 13 of 19 passing for 144 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
    
Petal's (10-5) Samuel Hopper completed 17 of 33 passes for 154 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He hit Nigel Wood for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 4:25 left in the second quarter for the Panthers' lone touchdown.
