United Blood Serives lends a hand with your Christmas shopping

This is a news release from United Blood Services

Still have some Christmas shopping to do? United Blood Services wants to help you out! Donate blood December 1st -20th and you will receive a $10 Amazon.com gift card via points in our online rewards store! December is a busy month and donating blood is often forgotten. Unfortunately, patients cannot take a holiday from needing lifesaving blood transfusions. Please take time to roll up your sleeve and give the gift of life! Whole blood, double red cell, platelet and plasma donations are needed. To make an appointment to donate, go to www.bloodhero.com and enter your zip code. For more information on donating blood, visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org.

Donors have several opportunities to donate and receive a $10 Amazon.com gift card via points in our online rewards
store:
     1. Tuesday, December 8 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Cameron Center, 711 North 10th Avenue
     2. Wednesday, December 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SCRMC Wellness Center, 23 Mason Street
     3. Thursday, December 10 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at South Central Regional Medical Center, conference rooms

As always, all blood types are needed in order to prevent any blood type shortages from occurring. However, United Blood Services is experiencing an increased need for type O negative red cells and type AB plasma donations. Type O negative blood is the only type that can safely be given to patients of all blood types. Type AB is the universal donor for plasma, just as O negative is for red cells. We’ve seen the need for AB plasma grow as more hospitals expand their trauma care.

Donors can also visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org the day of their donation and click on the “Health History Questionnaire”. This allows donors to complete the interview portion of their donation on-line, in the privacy of their home or office. Make sure to print your “Fast track donation ticket” and bring it with you to your donation.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 years of age must have signed permission from a parent or guardian. The sixteen year old donor permit form can be found at www.UnitedBloodServices.org . Donors receive a free cholesterol test. A photo ID is required to donate. For more information, call 877-UBSHERO (877-827-4376).
