HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Law enforcement officers have some tips to make your shopping experience safe this holiday season.

They advise you to park in well-lit areas and always put your purchases in the trunk. Also, try to get them in there as quickly as possible.

They said have your keys ready when you get to your car and always double-check to see if you doors are locked.

And they said you should be aware of your surroundings at all times.

"We want everyone to keep their minds focused not just on shopping, the deals that may be out there, but safety, safety for themselves, but also, safety for their property," said Lt. Jon Traxler with the Hattiesburg Police Dept.

Traxler also said when driving, watch out for people walking, especially children.
