PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

A local non-profit handed out Thanksgiving boxes to those in need Tuesday.

The Petal Children's Task Force holds the Thanksgiving food box giveaway every year.

The idea is to provide a box that has everything in it to make a Thanksgiving meal including a turkey.

Scarlett Hart, a board member of the Petal Children’s Task Force said it is a challenging and rewarding event.

"We see a lot of different things,” Hart said. “We have really grateful families that come in that just need some help. So we're just blessed to be able to serve and the people that come through if they are crying I usually cry. But it's a good day, it's a good day.”

The group’s goal was to serve over 170 families in the Petal area.

Members of local law enforcement were also there to lend a hand in the event.

Also, a group of soldiers from Camp Shelby came and brought plenty of food.

"They (brought) fully packed 28 boxes, turkeys and all. That was awesome," Hart said.

The Petal Children’s Task Force is a non-profit for the residents of Petal.
