Police enforce a perimeter around a mobile home where gunfire was heard Friday night.
PETAL, MS (WDAM) -
A Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT team found a Petal man dead inside a mobile home Friday night, a few hours after police responding to a complaint call heard what they thought was a gunshot coming from inside the residence.
The Highway Patrol said two Petal police officers responded to the call at 112 Cameron Street Lot # 103 just after six p.m. After several unsuccessful attempts to get the trailer's occupant to come to the door, the officers said they heard an apparent gunshot.
"The officers then retreated, they created a perimeter for the immediate area," said Brent Barfield, public information officer for Troop J of the Mississippi Highway Patrol. "At that point, the Mississippi Highway Patrol was called for their SWAT team to assist them."
Nearby residents were evacuated and several hours later, the SWAT team entered the trailer.
"They made entry to the residence and a deceased body was found," said Barfield.
Saturday, the Forrest County Coroner's Office identified the man as Richard McKinley, 50.
Petal Police said he appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound and said the incident is still being investigated.
