Collins opens new senior center

Senior Center Senior Center
COLLINS, MS (WDAM) -

The city of Collins held an open house Friday for the new senior citizens center.

Collins Mayor V.O. Smith said this was all made possible by receiving a $450,000 grant from the Mississippi Development Authority.

"In January, (we) will start the food service," Smith said. "It'll be free food to the seniors, so we invite people to come down between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a lunch."

The 3600 square-foot facility has a game room, a quilting room, as well as a full-size kitchen area.

The facility hopes to host an exercise program one or two days per week.

"We want people to come and use this facility to the best they can to make our city a great place to live," Smith said.

The facility is located at 900 Civic Center Blvd, which is behind the Collins Civic Center just off of Highway 49.
