Jones County man charged in cold case

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - In a case that has been under investigation for over 11 years, the Jones County Sheriff's Department has made an arrest surrounding the death of three-year-old Cassidy Sierra Whited of Laurel.

Whited's body was found on Feb. 7, 2004, in a pond near her uncle Sandy Alexander Beasley's home.

The toddler was left in his care.  When questioned, Beasley admitted he had been "partying" the night before and was not properly taking care of his niece that he was responsible for at the time, according to a news release issued by the Jones County Sheriff's Department.

There has been an ongoing investigation as to the events that lead up to the child's death.

The cause of Whited's death was ruled a drowning.

Beasley has been charged with child deprivation of necessaries with substantial harm.

He is currently in custody at the Jones County Adult Detention Center on charges of possession of a controlled substance from April 2015.

Beasley's initial appearance is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at Jones County Justice Court.
