MDOT to dedicate section of Highway 590 as Carlos “Coach” McDaniel Memorial Highway

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will host a dedication ceremony designating a section of Highway 590 in Jones County as Carlos “Coach” McDaniel Memorial Highway.

The highway dedication ceremony will be held November 19 at 6:00 p.m. at Jones County Junior College (JCJC) in the Home and Health Auditorium, located at 900 South Court Street in Ellisville, Miss.

The 2013 Session of the Mississippi Legislature designated a segment of Mississippi Highway 590 in Jones County beginning at U.S. Interstate 59 east to Augusta Road, including the Highway 590/29 Bypass as the Carlos “Coach” McDaniel Memorial Highway.

“MDOT is honored to dedicate this section of Highway 590 as Carlos “Coach” McDaniel Memorial Highway,” Commissioner King said.  “This memorial will remind all of us who travel this section of highway in Jones County of the life of this dedicated educator.”

A native of Covington County, Carlos Ray McDaniel graduated from Collins High School in 1960.  McDaniel was a stand-out basketball player and culminated high school with playing in the Mississippi All-Star Basketball game. McDaniel went on to teach at JCJC, establishing the intramural and recreation program, which he maintained for 32 years until he passed away in 1999.

MDOT will erect and maintain appropriate signs on this designated segment of highway in memory of Carlos “Coach” McDaniel.
