Pine Belt locations still collecting boxes for Operation Christmas Child

PINE BELT -

Operation Christmas Child is underway in the Pine Belt and there is still time to send a box to a child in need.

It is a worldwide Christmas project that collects shoe boxes full of goodies and encouragement to give to children around the world.

This week is National Collection Week for the organization and the perfect time for anyone who wants to participate in bringing joy to a child this holiday season.

There are over 15 drop off locations throughout the Pine Belt area and residents said they are working hard to make as many boxes as they can.

"Many of the children that receive a box each year, it's the first gift that they have ever received,” said Wayne Landers, member of the Southern Pine Belt Team of Operation Christmas Child. “The things that we take for granted are so important to them (such as) toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, wash cloths, notebook and pencils. Those things mean the world to them and we take them for granted but to them it's everything."

Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
