Marine Corps League Detachment 1073 hosts a party to celebrate the 240th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps Saturday night.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
The U.S. Marine Corps is about to turn 240-years old, and Saturday night, some local veteran Marines hosted an early birthday party to celebrate.
The Commiskey-Wheat Detachment 1073 of the Marine Corps League hosted an annual Birthday Ball at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
The event honored the families of three local Marines who received the Medal of Honor and it featured a special cake-cutting ceremony.
The Marines trace their beginnings back to Nov.10, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress authorized the formation of two Marine battalions.
"You have to be honorably discharged to be a member of the Marine Corps League and it's also for Navy Corpsmen, but honorably discharged is the key word," said Robert Hall, commandant of Detachment 1073. "We still continue on a lot of the traditions that the active Marines did."
The event also featured a special remembrance of POWs and those missing in action.
