Hands On Mississippi holds community-wide food drop in Petal

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Hands On Mississippi held a community-wide food drop for the residents of Forrest County Thursday at the Petal Civic Center.

The organization distributed boxed of food to anyone who presented an I.D. with a Forrest County address.

"Well we have done this over the past year we have given out over 100,000 pounds of food throughout the state of Mississippi," said Holly Gibbs, executive director of Hands On Mississippi. "We started on the Gulf Coast and have worked our way up. We've hit all seven of the local counties and we're looking to branch out so if anyone wants to partner with us, it's a very reasonable partnership and we can continue to fill the need."

The Petal Children's task force, along with help from Mississippi Power Company's Community Connection Volunteer group, distributed over 5,000 pounds of food to residents.

"Well there's a need," said Demaris Lee, executive director of Petal Children's Task Force. "There's a lot of people that need food. And at the task force, we just are giving out food every day and so we thought if we partner with this group that we would be able to give more food out so that's why we decided to do this."

The boxes consisted of items such as cereal, healthy canned goods and frozen meats.
