LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel has a big ball game this Friday against Wayne County.
However, before that epic battle, there were 40 students from across the Laurel School District's 4th and 5th grade elementary schools that competed in the Fall Multiplication Championship.
Each elementary school brought their best 10 students from fourth and fifth grade to compete for the title. There was an individual fourth grade winner and an overall fourth grade team winner as well as the fifth graders.
The schools that were competing in this Fall Multiplication Championship were, Mason, Maddox, Oak Park and Nora Davis. There will be a spring competition early next year where a whole new group of 40 students will battle for the Spring Multiplication Championship.
Team winners for fourth grade and team winners for fifth grade were determined by adding up all five team members' correct answers on a one-minute worksheet exercise. The teams with the most points win the district Fourth Grade Fall Championship and the district Fifth Grade Fall Championship.
The top performers from the one-minute worksheet exercise were then brought to the microphone like a spelling bee and were presented with random multiplication table questions. Each student was called to the microphone had three seconds to answer the multiplication question. If they got it right they stayed in line and the next person came up. If they missed the question they were out. The last one standing was the winner.
