Checkpoint in Jones Co. leads to drug bust

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from the Jones County Sheriff's Department. 

On Friday, Jones County Sheriff's deputies were conducting a driver's license checkpoint at Highway 529 and Forest Holifield Road.

A dark colored vehicle abruptly turned into a church parking lot and fled back on Highway 529 South.

The vehicle attempted to elude deputies while trying to throw out narcotics.

The vehicle eventually stopped at the intersection of JT Keys Road.

Kevin Knight, 43 of Taylorsville, was taken into custody.

Knight had his 5-year-old child in the vehicle.

Knight has been charged with three counts of possession of controlled substance With intent for having 49 grams of crack cocaine, 12 grams of powder cocaine and 24 grams of marijuana.

Knight has also been charged with child endangerment, driving while license is suspended and reckless driving.

Before being taken into custody, Knight was out on a felony bond for a previous charge.

Knight will make his initial appearance at Jones County Justice Court on Monday, Nov. 2, time to be determined.
