USM alumnus Gov. Phil Bryant says stance hasn't changed on state flag

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Seven on Your Side reached out to the office of Gov. Phil Bryant for a statement regarding his Alma mater, The University of Southern Mississippi, taking down the state flag.

Nicole Webb, Bryant's communications director, said his position has not changed and sent a statement where he referenced state law.

The statement is as followed:

"Mississippians overwhelmingly voted in 2001 to adopt the current Mississippi state flag.  I believe publicly funded institutions should respect the law as it is written today. It clearly states 'The state flag shall receive all the respect and ceremonious etiquette given the American flag.

Although Bryant did comment on his opinion of Ole Miss taking down the flag, Webb said Bryant would not be issuing a separate statement regarding his opinion on Southern Miss' decision.

Bryant received his bachelors degree from The University of Southern Mississippi.
