LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Lamar County Sheriff's Department is warning people about a scam that is catching on in the Pine Belt.

"We have people that are emailing others claiming to be from an accounting agency, and the emails look legit but if you scroll down you should be able to tell they aren't," Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel said.

Rigel said some people have already reported it to the department and they just want to make others aware.

"The emails are referencing a client and can range from trying to transfer money or get information about a customer's account," Rigel said.

Rigel said that two agencies names in Lamar County have been used in the scam, but does not want to put the names out.

"We just want everyone to be aware of this, including the older crowd that uses emails or maybe thinks they are handling accounting matters with a legitimate person over the computer, we just want them to be aware and not give out any information or account numbers," Rigel said.
