LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Laurel Police Department held a kickoff event for Red Ribbon Week at Laurel Middle School on Monday.
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention awareness campaign observed annually.
Mayor Johnny Magee, Chief Tyrone Steward and Laurel Fire Department officials were on hand to attend the event.
During the event, the school children made a drug free pledge and released red balloons to celebrate the pledge. Businesses and families within the community are encouraged to participate in the promotion of a drug-free environment and lifestyle.
The red ribbon was chosen as a symbol that commemorates the work of a drug enforcement agent, Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was killed in the line of duty and represents that one person can make a difference.
