RICHTON, MS (WDAM) -

A MDOT highway dedication ceremony was held Friday in honor of two first responders who died in the line of duty back in late June 2014.

EMT's Alan Smith and Dennis Rushing were responding to a medical emergency when their ambulance was struck by an 18 wheeler. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

More than 100 people, including family and friends, were in attendance for the dedication outside the Beat 3 Fire Department east of Richton.

"It does a mother's heart good and father's heart good to see this many people pulling together to honor our sons,” said Dorothy Vance, mother of Alan Smith. “I would also like to thank Greene County and especially the Sand Hill community for taking in our sons and making them a part of your community."

A stretch of Highway 63, which is in front of the station, will have signs bearing the names of the two men. One is at the fire station and another is near the Wayne county line.
