HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree held a proclamation ceremony in city hall Thursday declaring Red Ribbon Week.

He invited all citizens to join him in wearing a red ribbon in observance of the week and to share their support for a drug-free environment.

Businesses and individuals within the community are encouraged to participate in the promotion of a drug-free environment and lifestyle.

Local schools will participate to help raise awareness of Red Ribbon Week and will further educate their students on the impact of drugs.

The red ribbon was chosen as a symbol that commemorates the work of a drug enforcement administration agent, Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was killed in the line of duty and represents the belief that one person can make a difference.
