LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Senior citizens who live in Laurel and need transportation to the senior center can now get a ride for free.
D.J. Transit announced on Tuesday that it will now offer free transportation from Oct. 26 - Nov. 20 to the B.E. Murph Senior Center and others place in the area.
To get this free ride, D.J. Transit asks that one calls at least 24-hours hours in advance.
D.J. Transit also offers transportation to anywhere in the county to all age groups that live in Laurel and Jones County.
The cost is $1 per stop for Laurel residents and $2 for county residents.
Deshella Butler, executive director of D.J. Transit, said it is a cost effective way for seniors and residents that do not have adequate transportation.
"If they live within the Laurel city limits, it's $1 per stop," Butler said. "So if they're going to the doctor, it's one dollar to the doctor and one dollar home. It can be utilized for work, school, going to the doctor or going shopping."
The free ride program is an opportunity for seniors to get out of the house and stay active in the community.
