Local shop owners lend their shoe repair talents to a good cause

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

It is National Mammography day and women all over the country are encouraged to make a mammography appointment with their doctor.

In an effort to inspire women to get a mammogram, and raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer, the owners of Lamplight Shoe Repair are capable of helping women in a subtle but stylish way.

This skill began 20 years ago, when Hattiesburg residents Michael and Nell Jernigan started a hobby in their garage that is now a thriving business.

"We do all types of repairs from soles to heels," said Michael Jernigan.

On West 4th Street in Hattiesburg, the Jerinigan's craft is evident in the name of their business, but they do so much more.

"We actually work on handbags, we work on belts, we make custom fit belts (and) we work on luggage," said Michael Jernigan.

This list goes on, but for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this married couple will lend their craft of shoe repair to a campaign called, "Repair with Pink."

The organization partners with craftsmen like the Jernigans all over the country to custom-fit high heels, and men soles in pink to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

"Breast cancer has touched so many lives," said Michael Jernigan.

Michael and Nell said when the disease crashed into their family, it broke their hearts.

"Seventeen years ago, I had breast cancer and have been totally healed of that and have been cancer free for 17 years, and I give God all the credit and praise for that," said Nell Jernigan.

Now, through "Repair with Pink," the Jernigans want gentlemen to drop off their shoes, and ladies to hand over their heels to be replaced with pink soles. The Jernigans will donate some of the profit.

"The best thing we could do is lend our talents, and a portion of our proceeds, to help the cancer foundation perhaps find a cure," said Michael Jernigan.
