USM School of Polymers hosts first alumni event, technical symposium

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of former students and faculty from The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Polymers and High Performance Materials joined current students and staff for a first-ever gathering Friday afternoon.

The inaugural Alumni Event and Technical Symposium featured scientific presentations from current and former faculty and some reminiscing from former Southern Miss presidents Aubrey Lucas and Shelby Thames.

"There's a little chemistry to it, a little desire to roast and talk about old stories, but at the same time, reconnecting with alumni is a big deal," said James Rawlins, associate professor in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials.

"It's good to have old friends and old students back and to think about old times and to realize just how far this program has come," Thames said.

Thames founded the polymer science program 45 years ago and was also honored during the event.
