March of Dimes honors Mississippi for lowering pre-term birthrate

JACKSON (WDAM) - Mississippi receives a national award for powering the pre-term birthrate since 2009.

The March of Dimes' Virginia Apgar Award recognizes states that accept and meet a challenge to lower their pre-term birth rates by at least eight percent over a five-year period.   The March of Dimes says black infants born at less than 34 weeks saw the greatest decline. Mississippi also saw an increase in the number of babies born at full term.
