HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - In the midst of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, employees of the city of Hattiesburg gathered at the "pink" fountain behind city hall to hear Mayor Johnny DuPree read a proclamation for breast cancer survivors and all others affected by the disease.
DuPree encouraged those in attendance to have regular breast examinations, noting that Oct. 16 is National Mammography Day.
"You just can't give up, and as long as you're encouraged and you have people encouraging you, you'll feel that you can make it. You'll feel that you're going to be successful," said Johniece DuPree, the mayor's wife and a breast cancer survivor.
About two dozen pink balloons were released after the ceremony.
