LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee, the Laurel Housing Authority and residents gathered in city hall to celebrate October as National Housing America Month.
The mayor signed a proclamation, drawing attention to the success that the Laurel Housing Authority has had over many years.
Studies have shown the importance of safe, quality and affordable housing for those families that are unable to afford traditional housing.
Executive Director Ailrick Young said the success of the program is apparent from those it has served.
"One of the statistics that I think is very important is that when youth and kids lives in a place that's safe and feel like they have a environment that's safe for them, where they have housing, they tend to do a lot better in school so that's one of the benefits," Young said.
According to the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, in no state can a full-time minimum wage earner afford either a one or two bedroom rental unit under fair market rates.
