British Studies Inspiration for “Waterloo Wanderings” Dance Performance

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

Join the University of Southern Mississippi Department of Dance for "Waterloo Wanderings," a dance concert culminating the first ever British Studies in dance program on Oct. 10 in the Theatre and Dance Building, Studio 115. Pre-show events begin at 7:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 8:30 p.m. Pre-show events include live music, dance performance videos, slide shows, and a thorough British theatre-going experience.

In the summer of 2015, Southern Miss dance instructor Stacy Reischman Fletcher and five dance students participated in the University's British Studies program. Fletcher, along with Ansley Davis of Mobile, Ala., Macy Morris of Southaven, Miss., Cassie Zaremba of Citronelle, Ala., Cass Simmons of Petal, Miss. and Whitney Nabors of Stapleton, Ala. experienced live dance, art and culture in London and beyond.

"Our travels abroad changed us all as artists and individuals," said Fletcher, who also serves as the Department of Dance chair.

"We saw numerous dance concerts, took classes, visited other universities and went to museums. We climbed mountains and shared many adventures. The whole time we were starting to make these dances, the dances that will be in this concert. It was impossible not to be inspired by our time abroad."

The concert will consist of five dances and one dance film. Each dance is a result of the choreographer's experiences and discussions in London. Fletcher will also introduce a work in the concert. The dancers have collaborated with musicians from the School of Music, and each piece of the entire show will feature live accompaniment.

"The goal is to create a theatrical experience that is new to Southern Miss and to Hattiesburg," Fletcher said.

Admission is $5 at the door, cash only. For more information, call the Department of Dance at 601.266.4161.
