5K run to begin Hub City observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg's observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month is beginning with a new event in 2015.

A 5K Run will take place Saturday morning at Town Square Park.

The theme is "It May Hurt to Walk Away," and organizers expect nearly 100 runners. A one-mile fun run is also part of the event.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the run will start around 8 a.m. after a brief program.

"We're going to have a program where the guest speaker is going to talk about her struggles and her overcoming domestic violence," Lt. Latosha Myers-Mitchell of the Hattiesburg Police Department said. "At the end of the run, we will present our prizes to the winner and we're going to release balloons, signifying the release of hurt and pain and acknowledge the survivors and the victims of domestic violence."

Other events in October will include a domestic violence vigil and an awareness and response course for women at the Hattiesburg Police and Fire Training Academy.
