FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Forrest County Sheriff’s Department employee was beaten and robbed during an early morning incident at his Forrest County home.

“Around 4:40 a.m. deputies received a call that Tommy Adams, one of our employees was beaten and robbed,” Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee said.

Tommy Adams, the Forrest County Sheriff’s Department Service Center Manager, was leaving his home on River Road to head to work, when McGee said someone came up behind him and struck him in the head with a baseball bat.

McGee said those two were later identified as Sharla Smith, 33, and Joseph Lucky, 39, both of Hattiesburg, and they were arrested about two hours after the incident.

“Smith and Lucky both beat him and during the process they took his wallet,” McGee said.

Adams was transported to a local hospital, where he was checked for a concussion, but later released and is recovering at home.

“The pair had duct tape with them and intended to tie him up and take whatever valuables they could,” McGee said.

Lucky was released from the Forrest County Jail on Friday, where he posted bond on a drug charge according to McGee.

“Lucky knew Tommy and worked as a trustee at the service center, so he was familiar with Tommy’s hours and things like that,” McGee said. “I did fire him(Lucky) from that trustee job about 2 or 3 years ago because he couldn’t show up to work on time, and his work record was not that great.”

According to McGee, the penalty for Lucky could be enhanced because he is a convicted felon.

Lucky and Smith are both being housed at the Forrest County Jail where they are each charged with one count of strong armed robbery.

Tommy is the husband of outgoing Forrest County Circuit Clerk Lou Ellen Adams, who was not injured in the robbery. McGee said she was inside the home sleeping when it occurred.
