LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

National "Night Out Against Crime" is Tuesday, Oct. 6 and in Laurel and area residents will gather at Mason Park to celebrate the occasion.

On Tuesday, Mayor Johnny Magee’s proclamation in support of this special night was presented to members of the Laurel Police Department in the rotunda of city hall.

The Laurel Police Department sponsors this annual event and will provide book bags filled with school supplies to hundreds of area children.

There will also be free food provided for the public and live entertainment.

Tyrone Stewart, chief of the Laurel Police Department, said that it is important for police to build relationships with the communities they serve.

The public from across the Pine Belt is invited to participate in this event.

“It’s important when you bring all of the communities together and build a better rapport to talk about issue and just to have that family love and atmosphere throughout your city and that’s what we represent,” Stewart said. “We’re providing the less fortunate kids tools where they can be successful in classrooms because to be honest with you, they are our future."

The event starts at 5 p.m and will run through 8 p.m. and residents are encouraged to turn on their porch lights and exterior home lighting as an expression of support for a safer community.
