Forrest General Hospital’s October Support Group Meetings, Classes, and Events

Bereavement Support Group
Tuesday, October 6

6 p.m.
Forrest General’s Home Care and Hospice
1414 South 28th Avenue
The Bereavement Support Group is for individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The meetings occur on the first Tuesday of every month and are free to the public. For more information, call 601-288-2500.

Better Breathers Support Group

The Better Breathers Support Group gives patients, families and friends an opportunity to gather and share information about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), as well as other breathing disorders. COPD includes conditions such as emphysema, asthma and chronic bronchitis. The group also has access to informational resources and speakers who are knowledgeable about the special needs of people with breathing disorders. The meetings occur on the third Wednesday of every month and are free to the public. Call 601-288-1951.

Forrest General’s Breastfeeding Support Group is led by lactation nurses and designed for moms who may need extra guidance in helping their baby get the best nutrition possible through breastfeeding. The support group is free, and babies are welcome to attend with their moms! The meetings occur on the first and third Thursday of each month, unless it falls on a holiday. Screenings will be scheduled at the lecture for the following day. Pine Belt residents have an opportunity to receive a free screening for Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). The lecture is Monday, October 12, and the screening is Tuesday, October 13. You must attend both to qualify for the free screening. The Parkinson’s Support Group meets on the first Wednesday of every month and is designed to support those with Parkinson’s, their caregivers, and family members. For more information, call facilitator Verna Smith at 601-582-5350.

Reach to Recovery

Reach to Recovery is led by trained breast cancer survivors and is designed for women diagnosed with breast cancer. If interested or for more information, call 1-800-227-2345.

Forrest General’s Family Birthplace Classes

Family Birthplace Classes are held in Forrest General’s Maple Room located near Forrester’s Food Court in the hospital. All classes last only one session except for the Childbirth Preparation Course, which lasts for two sessions or a longer Saturday session. Classes can be repeated. Classes are free for those delivering at Forrest General or $25 for others who wish to attend, except the Saturday Childbirth Preparation Class, which is $50.   • Childbirth Preparation Course

Prepares participants for labor and delivery and offers a tour of the Family Birthplace.

Classes meet for two weeks on Thursday from 6-8:30 p.m.

  • Saturday Childbirth Preparation Course

Prepares participants for labor and delivery and offers a tour of the Family Birthplace.

Meets on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

October 3

  • Breastfeeding Class

Provides details about breastfeeding for expectant and new moms, as well as breastfeeding mothers who are having difficulty nursing or have questions.

Meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

October 27

  • Baby Care Class

Teaches skills for new and expectant parents and baby caregivers such as bathing, diapering and recognizing signs and symptoms of illness. to attend.

Meets Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 p.m.

October 6

  • Sibling Class

The sibling class is a fun and exciting way to help children ages 4-8 adjust to the birth of a new family member. This class teaches children about their new role as big brothers or sisters and includes a tour of the Family Birthplace. One parent is required to attend with their child or children.

Meets Thursday evening from 6 – 7 p.m.

Forrest General’s Fitness for Two Classes

The Mommie & Me classes give mothers and their babies the opportunity to interact and exercise together using music, movement, story and rhyme. Topics for moms include parenting suggestions, relationship navigation and child development guidelines. From the First Year until Toddler Years, children are developing social, language, cognitive and motor skills for the next season of life. The six week session charge is $30. All classes meet at the Spirit of Women Conference Room in 28th Place, 421 South 28th Avenue. To register, or for more information on the following classes call FGH OnCall at 1-800-844-4445.

  • Mommie & Me – The First Year

First-year mothers can share stories about their first-year experiences as they learn developmental milestones for their babies.

Meets on Wednesday mornings for six weeks, 10-11:30 a.m.

  • Mommie & Me – Just Movin’

Just Movin’ is geared toward the early walkers, often 11 to 22 months old. Children experience activities that will develop physical, mental and social skills.

Meets Monday mornings for six weeks, 10 – 11:30 a.m.

October 26 – November 9 (mini session)

  • Mommie & Me – Toddler Years

The Toddler year class is the perfect launch into pre-school. Moms and their toddlers, age 22 months to 3 years, learn and grow while making great memories.

Meets Tuesday mornings for six weeks, 10 – 11:30 a.m.

September 15 – October 20

October 27 – November 10 (mini session)

  • Pregnancy Exercise Program

In a support group environment, the classes combine walking, strengthening, stretching and isolation exercises with education topics such as breathing techniques, discomfort releases, labor and delivery preparation and postpartum recovery. Program includes one free Coach’s Corner class.

Meets each Monday for six weeks, 6:30 – 8 p.m.

September 14 – October 19

October 26 – December 7 (No meeting November 23)

  • Coach’s Corner

This one-session class teaches labor and delivery, breathing techniques and the coach’s role throughout the childbirth experience. The coach and mother-to-be attend together. Curriculum benefits pregnancy first-times, as well as repeaters. An optional tour of Forrest General is included. Coach’s Corner is free for Pregnancy Exercise Program Participants and $10 for anyone else who would like to participate.
