HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from Southern Pine Electric.
A scam targeting Southern Pine commercial members has been reported in the Magee area.
Several businesses reported they were called Tuesday by someone claiming to be a Southern Pine employee demanding payment to avoid having their power shut off.
The calls came from a phone number with an 888 prefix. The members were told to pay with a Moneygram.
This is a scam and Southern Pine members should not respond to the demands. Southern Pine will never call a member and threaten loss of service if a payment is not received.
Nor will Southern Pine call a member and ask for personal identification such as a Social Security number or banking information.
Anyone receiving a scam call should contact local authorities and the Mississippi Attorney General's Office of Consumer Protection at 1-800-281-4418.
